    Cognitive Flexibility in Children: Why Children Struggle With Transitions, Changes, and “Not My Way” Moments

    Cognitive flexibility is an important executive functioning skill that helps children shift their thinking, adjust to change, try another way, and recover when things do not go as expected. It allows a child to move from one activity to another, accept a change in routine, solve problems, tolerate mistakes, and consider someone else’s idea.

    Parents and teachers often notice cognitive flexibility difficulties when a child becomes upset during transitions, insists on doing things one way, struggles when plans change, has difficulty losing games, becomes stuck on fairness, resists new activities, or melts down when something does not match their expectation.

    From the outside, these behaviours may look like stubbornness, defiance, rigidity, control-seeking, or “wanting everything their way.” Sometimes behaviour and motivation may be part of the picture. However, cognitive flexibility is a developmental skill. Some children truly have difficulty shifting their thoughts, emotions, expectations, attention, or body state when the situation changes.

    Cognitive flexibility is closely connected to executive functioning. Executive functioning helps children plan, organize, remember, start, stop, shift, monitor, and follow through. Cognitive flexibility is the “shift” part of that system. It helps children adapt when the original plan, idea, rule, or expectation no longer works.

    What Is Cognitive Flexibility?

    Cognitive flexibility is the ability to shift thinking and adapt to new information, changes, mistakes, or unexpected situations.

    A child uses cognitive flexibility when they move from playtime to dinner, accept that a favourite toy is unavailable, try a different strategy in math, change the rules of a game, recover after losing, or understand that another person may have a different idea.

    Cognitive flexibility helps children move from one thought to another. It supports problem-solving, transitions, learning, emotional regulation, social participation, and independence.

    When cognitive flexibility is difficult, a child may become stuck. They may get stuck on one idea, one plan, one rule, one answer, one expectation, or one way of doing something. Even when adults explain the situation, the child may have difficulty shifting.

    The helpful question is not simply, “Why is this child being stubborn?” A better question is: What is the child having difficulty shifting away from, and what makes the change feel hard?

    Cognitive Flexibility Is More Than “Going With the Flow”

    Children are often expected to “be flexible,” “calm down,” “move on,” or “try another way.” These are important goals, but they are not always easy.

    Being flexible requires several skills working together. The child must notice that something changed, understand what the change means, manage the emotional reaction, let go of the original expectation, think of another option, and act on the new plan.

    For example, if outdoor recess is cancelled because of rain, a flexible child may feel disappointed but adjust to indoor play. A child with cognitive flexibility difficulties may become very upset because their brain was prepared for one plan and now has to shift quickly to another.

    The child may not simply be “overreacting.” They may be experiencing the change as confusing, unfair, unsafe, unpredictable, or emotionally overwhelming.

    Cognitive Flexibility Is Developmental

    Cognitive flexibility develops gradually. Young children naturally need adult support to handle changes, transitions, mistakes, sharing, waiting, and unexpected events.

    As children grow, they are expected to become more flexible. They gradually learn to accept changes in plans, shift between activities, understand other perspectives, solve problems in more than one way, and recover when things do not go as expected.

    However, cognitive flexibility does not develop at the same pace for every child. Some children need more support than expected for their age. This may be related to autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, anxiety, sensory regulation difficulties, language comprehension, emotional regulation, learning difficulties, developmental delays, sleep concerns, or environmental stress.

    The goal is not to expect children to be perfectly flexible. The goal is to understand whether the child’s difficulty with change is interfering with participation, learning, routines, relationships, or emotional well-being.

    Transitions and Changes in Routine

    Transitions are one of the most common situations where cognitive flexibility difficulties appear.

    A transition requires the child to stop one activity, shift attention, shift body state, shift expectations, and begin something new. This can be difficult when the child is deeply engaged, tired, anxious, sensory overwhelmed, or unsure what comes next.

    A child may struggle when moving from play to homework, screen time to dinner, recess to class, home to school, bath to bedtime, or one classroom activity to another. They may argue, cry, run away, freeze, negotiate, ignore instructions, or become upset.

    Transitions are especially difficult when they are unexpected, rushed, unclear, or emotionally loaded. For example, a child may manage a predictable transition but become distressed when the schedule changes suddenly.

    The difficulty may not be the new activity alone. The child may be struggling to let go of the old activity, tolerate the change, and organize their body and mind for the next demand.

    Getting Stuck on One Idea or Plan

    Some children become stuck on one idea, plan, or expectation. They may insist that something must happen exactly the way they imagined.

    For example, a child may become upset because they wanted the blue cup, expected to sit in a specific chair, planned to play a certain game, wanted a parent to drive a certain route, or expected the day to follow a familiar order.

    Adults may feel that the issue is small. For the child, the problem may feel much bigger because their thinking has become locked onto one expectation. When the expectation changes, the child may not know how to shift to another possibility.

    This can happen at home, school, playgrounds, community outings, and social situations. The child may ask the same question repeatedly, argue for the original plan, become distressed, or refuse to move forward.

    Cognitive flexibility helps children understand that there can be more than one acceptable plan. When this skill is difficult, the child may experience one changed detail as a major problem.

    “Not My Way” Moments

    Many children with cognitive flexibility difficulties struggle with “not my way” moments.

    These are situations where the child’s expectation does not match reality. Someone else chooses the game. A peer changes the rule. A sibling gets the first turn. The teacher asks the child to use a different strategy. The parent says the plan has changed.

    The child may become upset not because they are spoiled or selfish, but because shifting away from their preferred expectation is genuinely hard.

    “Not my way” moments require the child to tolerate disappointment, manage fairness concerns, understand another person’s perspective, and accept a new plan. This requires both executive functioning and emotional regulation.

    When the child cannot shift, they may argue, cry, refuse, become controlling, or try to force the situation back to the original plan.

    Losing Games, Mistakes, and Fairness

    Cognitive flexibility is important during games, sports, and group activities.

    A child needs flexibility to lose a game, accept a changed rule, tolerate someone else winning, recover from a mistake, and keep playing when things do not go as planned.

    When flexibility is difficult, the child may become very upset when losing, accuse others of cheating, insist on restarting, change the rules, quit suddenly, or refuse to play unless they can control the outcome.

    Fairness can also become a sticking point. Some children become very focused on whether something is equal, correct, or exactly as expected. They may have difficulty moving forward if something feels unfair, even if the situation is minor or accidental.

    This does not mean fairness does not matter. It means the child may have difficulty shifting attention away from the unfairness and back toward participation, problem-solving, or repair.

    Problem-Solving and Trying Another Strategy

    Cognitive flexibility helps children solve problems. When one strategy does not work, the child needs to try another way.

    For example, if a puzzle piece does not fit, the child may need to rotate it or try another piece. If a math strategy does not work, they may need to use a different method. If a peer does not want to play one game, the child may need to suggest another option.

    When flexibility is difficult, the child may repeat the same strategy even when it is not working. They may become frustrated, give up quickly, insist the task is impossible, or blame the materials, task, or other people.

    Some children can solve problems when calm but lose flexibility when frustrated. Once emotion rises, the child may become stuck and unable to think of alternatives.

    Problem-solving requires the child to pause, notice the problem, let go of the first plan, and test another approach.

    Flexible Attention

    Cognitive flexibility is also related to flexible attention. Flexible attention is the ability to shift focus from one thing to another when needed.

    A child uses flexible attention when they stop thinking about a preferred topic, respond when their name is called, move from one worksheet question to the next, shift from listening to writing, or stop focusing on a small detail and return to the main task.

    When flexible attention is difficult, the child may become stuck on a preferred interest, a mistake, a detail, a worry, or something that happened earlier. They may continue talking about one topic even when others have moved on. They may have difficulty stopping a preferred activity or shifting into an adult-directed task.

    This can look like not listening, ignoring, or being oppositional. However, the child may be having difficulty disengaging attention from one focus and shifting it to another.

    Cognitive Flexibility and Emotional Regulation

    Cognitive flexibility and emotional regulation are closely connected.

    When plans change, mistakes happen, or expectations are not met, children often experience emotion. They may feel disappointed, embarrassed, angry, anxious, confused, or overwhelmed.

    A child needs emotional regulation to tolerate the feeling. They also need cognitive flexibility to think of another option. If the child becomes emotionally flooded, flexible thinking may become much harder.

    For example, a child who loses a game may need to manage disappointment and also shift from “I must win” to “I can try again.” A child who makes a spelling mistake may need to manage frustration and shift from “I ruined it” to “I can fix it.”

    When emotional regulation is difficult, the child may become stuck in the feeling. When cognitive flexibility is difficult, the child may become stuck in the thought. In many children, both happen together.

    Cognitive Flexibility and Anxiety

    Anxiety can make flexibility harder. When a child feels anxious, predictability may feel safer. Familiar routines, known rules, preferred people, and expected outcomes may help the child feel more in control.

    When something changes, the child may feel uncertain or unsafe. They may ask repeated questions, resist new activities, avoid unfamiliar places, or become upset when they do not know what will happen next.

    A child with anxiety may look rigid because they are trying to reduce uncertainty. They may insist on one plan because another plan feels risky. They may avoid trying another way because they fear making a mistake.

    In these cases, the child’s rigidity may be a coping response. The child is not only trying to control others. They may be trying to manage internal worry.

    Cognitive Flexibility and Autism Spectrum Disorder

    Cognitive flexibility differences are commonly discussed in relation to autism spectrum disorder, also known as ASD.

    Some autistic children may have difficulty with changes in routine, transitions, unexpected events, flexible play, open-ended tasks, shifting attention, or accepting changes to preferred activities. They may also have strong interests, repeated routines, or specific ways they like things to happen.

    Predictability may help the child feel regulated and safe. Changes may feel overwhelming, confusing, or distressing, especially when they happen suddenly or without enough explanation.

    It is important not to assume that rigidity is intentional misbehaviour. It may be connected to sensory processing, communication, anxiety, predictability, emotional regulation, or difficulty shifting attention and expectations.

    It is also important not to assume that cognitive flexibility difficulties automatically mean autism. Flexibility challenges can also appear in children with ADHD, anxiety, sensory processing differences, learning difficulties, developmental delays, or no formal diagnosis.

    Cognitive Flexibility and ADHD

    Cognitive flexibility can also be difficult for some children with ADHD.

    ADHD is often associated with inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, but it can also affect executive functioning. A child with ADHD may have difficulty shifting attention, stopping a preferred activity, changing strategies, managing frustration, or moving from one task to another.

    Some children with ADHD become stuck because they are highly engaged in something stimulating. Others shift too quickly and have difficulty staying with the task. In both cases, attention regulation and flexibility are involved.

    A child with ADHD may also react strongly when interrupted, rushed, corrected, or asked to switch from a preferred activity to a low-interest task. The issue may not be only behaviour. The child may be struggling with attention shifting, inhibition, motivation, and emotional regulation at the same time.

    Cognitive Flexibility and Sensory Regulation

    Sensory regulation can affect flexibility. A child who is overwhelmed, under-alert, sensory-seeking, tired, hungry, or uncomfortable may have less capacity to handle change.

    For example, a child may tolerate a transition on a calm day but become upset during the same transition in a noisy classroom. Another child may handle a change at home but struggle in a bright, crowded, unpredictable environment. A child who is already dysregulated after recess may have difficulty shifting into quiet classroom work.

    Changes often require the child to adjust both mentally and physically. If the child’s body is already stressed, flexibility may decrease.

    Sensory processing does not explain every flexibility difficulty, but regulation can strongly affect how well a child can shift, adapt, and recover.

    Cognitive Flexibility and Language Comprehension

    Some children appear inflexible because they do not fully understand what is being asked or what changed.

    Language-heavy instructions, vague expectations, figurative language, time words, sequence words, and social explanations can be difficult. If the child does not understand the change clearly, they may resist it.

    For example, “We might go later,” “We’ll see,” “Just be flexible,” or “Use your common sense” may be confusing. The child may need more concrete information to understand what is happening, what is expected, and what options are available.

    Language comprehension difficulties can make transitions, social problem-solving, and changes in routine harder. The child may not be refusing to shift; they may not understand the new plan well enough to shift confidently.

    Cognitive Flexibility and Learning Difficulties

    Learning difficulties can also affect flexibility.

    A child may become rigid during reading, writing, or math because the task feels confusing or difficult. They may resist trying a new strategy because the old strategy feels safer, even if it is not working well. They may become upset when corrected because correction highlights an area of difficulty.

    For example, a child who struggles with writing may insist they “cannot” change a sentence. A child who struggles with math may become upset when asked to solve the problem another way. A child who has experienced repeated failure may resist new tasks because flexibility feels risky.

    This does not always mean the child is unwilling to learn. The child may be protecting themselves from confusion, embarrassment, or failure.

    Cognitive Flexibility and Social Participation

    Cognitive flexibility is important for friendships and social participation.

    Social situations are unpredictable. Children need to take turns, compromise, respond to others’ ideas, adjust play plans, accept different opinions, repair misunderstandings, and handle disappointment.

    When flexibility is difficult, a child may insist on choosing the game, controlling the rules, correcting peers, refusing changes, or becoming upset when others do not follow their idea. Peers may see the child as bossy, controlling, or unfair, even when the child is not trying to hurt anyone.

    Social flexibility also requires perspective-taking. The child needs to understand that other people may think, feel, want, or expect something different. This can be difficult for children with social communication challenges, anxiety, autism, ADHD, or emotional regulation difficulties.

    Open-Ended Tasks and Unclear Expectations

    Open-ended tasks can be especially hard for children with cognitive flexibility difficulties.

    Tasks such as “write a story,” “choose a topic,” “clean your room,” “make a project,” or “play together nicely” may seem simple to adults, but they require the child to generate options, choose a plan, organize steps, tolerate uncertainty, and adjust along the way.

    Some children become stuck because there are too many possibilities. Others become anxious because they do not know what the “right” answer is. Some choose one idea and cannot shift even when it does not work.

    Open-ended tasks require flexibility, planning, working memory, emotional regulation, and self-monitoring. When any of these skills are difficult, the child may avoid, freeze, argue, or insist on doing things one specific way.

    What Parents and Teachers May Notice

    Parents and teachers may notice that the child has difficulty with transitions, changes in routine, losing games, mistakes, unexpected events, or someone else’s ideas.

    The child may insist on sameness, ask repeated questions, become upset when plans change, have difficulty stopping preferred activities, or resist trying new strategies. They may become stuck on rules, fairness, details, routines, or how they expected something to happen.

    Some children become visibly upset, angry, or anxious. Others shut down, refuse, negotiate, or avoid. Some children appear controlling because they are trying to keep the situation predictable.

    The pattern matters. Adults should notice what kinds of changes are hardest, whether the child struggles more when tired or overwhelmed, whether the difficulty happens across settings, and whether the child can recover after support.

    What Cognitive Flexibility Difficulties Are Not

    Cognitive flexibility difficulty is not automatically defiance, spoiled behaviour, bad parenting, manipulation, or lack of intelligence.

    A child may know that plans can change but still struggle when it happens. They may understand the rule but become upset when the rule changes. They may want to participate but feel unable to shift away from their original expectation.

    This does not mean adults should allow every rigid demand. Children still need boundaries, expectations, and opportunities to learn flexibility. However, understanding the reason behind the rigidity helps adults respond more accurately.

    The goal is not simply to force the child to “get over it.” The goal is to help the child gradually build the ability to shift, adapt, problem-solve, and recover.

    Is It Cognitive Flexibility, Anxiety, Autism, ADHD, or Something Else?

    It is not always easy to know why a child struggles with flexibility. Several factors may overlap.

    Cognitive flexibility may be involved when the child becomes stuck on one idea, plan, rule, expectation, or strategy.

    Anxiety may be involved when the child resists change because uncertainty feels unsafe or overwhelming.

    Autism may be involved when flexibility difficulties occur alongside sensory differences, social communication differences, restricted interests, repetitive patterns, or strong need for predictability.

    ADHD may be involved when the child has difficulty shifting attention, stopping preferred activities, inhibiting reactions, or regulating emotions during transitions.

    Sensory regulation may be involved when change becomes harder in noisy, busy, uncomfortable, or overwhelming environments.

    Language comprehension may be involved when the child does not fully understand the new expectation or change in plan.

    Learning difficulties may be involved when the child becomes rigid during tasks that feel hard, confusing, or embarrassing.

    Emotional regulation may be involved when disappointment, frustration, embarrassment, or anger make it harder to shift.

    Sleep, hunger, stress, developmental level, family changes, school demands, and environmental expectations can also affect flexibility.

    In many children, more than one factor is involved.

    When Should Parents or Teachers Seek Support?

    Parents and teachers may consider seeking support when cognitive flexibility difficulties are frequent, intense, persistent, or interfering with learning, routines, emotional regulation, social participation, or family life.

    Support may be helpful when a child regularly has difficulty with transitions, changes in routine, losing games, mistakes, unexpected events, open-ended tasks, or non-preferred activities.

    Professional input may be especially important when flexibility difficulties cause frequent meltdowns, school refusal, family conflict, peer difficulties, classroom disruption, avoidance, anxiety, or difficulty participating in age-expected routines.

    Support may also be important when rigidity appears alongside sensory sensitivities, attention difficulties, impulsivity, emotional outbursts, social communication differences, learning concerns, sleep problems, language difficulties, or suspected ADHD or autism spectrum disorder.

    A sudden increase in rigidity or difficulty with change should also be taken seriously. Adults should consider changes in sleep, health, stress, medication, emotional well-being, school demands, family circumstances, or environment.

    Which Professionals Can Help?

    An occupational therapist can assess how cognitive flexibility affects participation in everyday activities, including routines, transitions, play, schoolwork, self-care, emotional regulation, sensory regulation, executive functioning, and independence.

    A psychologist or neuropsychologist may assess executive functioning, cognitive flexibility, ADHD, anxiety, emotional regulation, learning, and cognitive skills.

    A developmental pediatrician, pediatrician, or psychiatrist may be involved when autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, anxiety, sleep, medication, medical factors, or broader developmental concerns need to be explored.

    A speech-language pathologist may be helpful when flexibility difficulties are connected to language comprehension, social communication, understanding instructions, narrative thinking, or difficulty understanding social expectations.

    A teacher, special education teacher, or school team can provide important observations about how the child manages transitions, changes in routines, group work, play, classroom expectations, and problem-solving during the school day.

    A physiotherapist may be involved when movement, balance, coordination, posture, endurance, or motor planning affects participation in physical routines or transitions.
